Security Cameras & Alarm Systems for Commercial & Residential Interests in Harrodsburg, Kentucky (KY)

The city of Harrodsburg, KY is located in Mercer County. It was not established by the Virginia House of Burgesses until after Boonesborough, and the Kentucky legislature did not officially incorporate the city until 1836. Regardless of these facts, Harrodsburg is still viewed as the oldest city in the state, and has received the honor of being the oldest American permanent settlement to the west of the Appalachians. According to the census of 2010, there was a population of 8,340. The area has experienced slow, but continued growth. The three most notable contributors to the local economy and sources for employment are the Hitachi Automotive Products, Corning Incorporated, and Trim Masters plants.

The city was originally founded back in June 16, 1774. It was initially referred to as Harrodstown, and was named after the founder James Harrod. Unfortunately, within that year the settlement had to be abandoned due to Shawnee attacks. However, it was resettled the following year. Harrodstown is just one of three settlements in present day Kentucky that existed when the 13 colonies declared their independence in 1776. In 1785, the Virginia General Assembly formally established the settlement under the name, Harrodsburg. The city became the location for the United States District Court for the District of Kentucky, which was formed due to the passing of the Judiciary Act of 1789. During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate troops would occupy the town. After the Battle of Perryville, the majority of Harrodsburg was turned into makeshift hospitals to help with those injured. On October 10, 1862 the 9th Kentucky Cavalry lead by Lt Col. John Boyle, raided the hospitals and were able to capture roughly 1600 sick and wounded Confederate soldiers. Following this event, the city was placed under martial law for the rest of the war. In 1884 construction commenced on the Louisville Southern Railroad network. It ran from Louisville through Lawrenceburg and Shelbyville to Harrodsburg, and was completed in 1888.

The city of Harrodsburg takes a real sense of pride in its history and pays homage to the past. At the Old Fort Harrod State Park there is a full-scale replica fort of the first settlement. There is also the Beaumont Inn, which is the oldest family-operated country inn within Kentucky. In addition to the historical attractions, there are dozens of wineries and ten bourbon distilleries within a short distance as well. The city has been mentioned as a great vacation destination by several publications including Smithsonian Magazine, which named it one of the “20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2014”.
