Versailles, KY is a charming little city nestled in Woodford County. As of the 2010 census, the area recorded a population of 8,568 citizens living on the town’s 2.8 square miles of land. The city is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan area and within the state it is a portion of the Bluegrass Region. Versailles is renowned for its production of thoroughbred horses and an assortment of other livestock. The city is the principal location for the training and breeding of thoroughbred, Standardbred, and saddlebred pleasure horses. There are at least eighteen farms within Versailles devoted solely to raising thoroughbreds. There are also numerous farms for other breeds as well. Due to the large presence of the equine industry, the economy benefits substantially from it and the tourism it brings to the city. Another considerable attraction for Versailles is the Woodford Reserve Distillery, which has earned a spot on the Bourbon Trail.

The city of Versailles was founded back in 1792, on eighty acres of land. The property chosen for the settlement was owned by a minor. The guardian of the child was able to designate the name for the area. He decided to name it after the city of Versailles, France as a means to honor General Lafayette. While the two cities share a name, they are not pronounced in the same way. A census conducted in 1800 recorded that the region had a total of 172 inhabitants. The town experienced rapid growth, and just ten years later the population increased by 184%. In the modern age, expansion has occurred at a much slower rate. Consistently the growth rate has been less than 15%. Among the populace, the largest age segment is citizens between 25 to 44 years of age. This segment accounts for 29.4% of the total number of residents. 37 years of age is the median age for the city.

The small town charm of the city is one-of-a-kind, which is why it has been used as a filming location in multiple movies. The setting for the quaint town scenes in the movie Elizabethtown were primarily filmed in Versailles. It was also the backdrop for Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. The 2010 movie Secretariat, based on the famous racehorse, contained a scene that was shot at a church within the city as well.

There is an enormous amount of pride for the city by the community. This is evident by the efforts to keep the beautiful landscape clean and safe. The rural atmosphere has been nurtured so that it can remain an extraordinary home for citizens. The past is celebrated but the city is also looking for ways to move towards the future by improving local businesses.
