The city of Paris, KY is located in Bourbon County. It had a population of 8,553 according to the 2010 census. The estimated populace for 2016 predicted 15.0% growth as the total number of residents rose to 9,840. Overall, the population changes have not been consistent, but it has been predominantly positive. There is a diverse segment of ages among inhabitants. The largest age segment, 28.5%, was comprised of those between the ages of 25 to 44. Surprisingly, the 18 to 24 category is less represented in the city as it accounts for only 9.0% of the total. The median age of Paris was calculated to be 36 years. The city is in close proximity to Lexington, only a mere 18 miles to the northeast. Due to this, Paris forms a portion of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The area was first settled by Joseph Houston in 1776, but as there were prior land grants, he had to relocate. Lawrence Protzman bought the land of current-day Paris in 1786. He mapped out 250 acres to form a town and proposed a deal, which was ultimately accepted, with the Virginia Legislature to make it the seat of the newly created Bourbon County by offering land for public buildings. The town was officially established in 1789 under the name Hopewell. The name was chosen after Protzman’s hometown Hopewell, New Jersey. However, the following year it was given the new name Paris, after the capital of France. This was to recognize the assistance of the French throughout the American Revolution. The earliest settlers in the end of the 18th and the start of the 19th centuries were refugees from France who escaped the excesses of the French Revolution. The city was formally incorporated as Paris in 1839, and reincorporated in 1890.

The community of Paris has been committed to restoring the historic buildings downtown. The Main Street Program has been in effect since 1992. It has received lots of time, money, and effort in order to preserve and revitalize buildings located on the Main Street stretch of the city. Numerous projects aimed to renovate facades were funded by state grants. In just two years, the program was responsible for the renovation of fifteen buildings. The revitalization efforts to maintain a vibrant downtown have been very beneficial to a variety of businesses. It has even attracted new restaurants and shops to the area. Downtown Paris is a point of pride for the city and a popular destination for visitors. There is a diverse offering of foods and shopping, making it the perfect place to spend a day.
