Home Security & Vacations Lexington, Kentucky

Punxsutawney Phil wasn't playing when he predicted six more weeks of winter. Spring is now slowly, fingers crossed, approaching and if you are like thousands of other Kentuckians, you may be celebrating with a sunny beach vacation or plans to follow the Cats this tournament season. Either way, you deserve to relax and enjoy your time away. Unfortunately, while you are planing your getaway, thieves are often hard at work targeting the homes of people, like you, who will be away on vacation. So while you are fantasizing about sandy beaches or hanging another banner, there is one thing that you do not want to forget about: keeping your home safe!

Lock-up

  • Before you leave your driveway, check and double-check that all doors and windows are properly secure. One third of all burglaries are through an open or unlocked door or window.
  • If you have a garage door make sure to use the manual lock and secure sliding glass doors by placing a pipe or metal bar in the middle bottom tract of the door slide.

Don't advertise your vacancy on social media

You are finally away from work and your everyday life and it's picture perfect but think twice before you post your amazing view on social media sites. Burglars appreciate knowing that you are miles away from your home and social media is one of their main information resources. You can keep the camera rolling, just resist posting until you are home!

Make your home look occupied

  • Beware, vacation brain may have you overwhelmed with packing and planing but do not forget to take time to prepare your home for your absence. It doesn't take long for someone to suspect your absence. Piles of news papers, mail, and packages is an obvious sign that you are away. Ask a trusted neighbor or family member to collect your mail, packages and news papers while you are gone or simply submit a stop mail request online to the united states postal service.
  • A dark house=an empty house. Schedule daily automatic timers for lighting and even televisions throughout your home to disguise your absence.
  • Install motion sensor lightning around the exterior of your home.

Calling all Neighbors

  • No one is closer to your home while your on vacation than your neighbors. Let them know your plans so they can keep an eye on your home and make sure to exchange contact information in case of an emergency.
  • Ask a neighbor to put your trash cans out on trash day or park their car in your driveway while you are gone.
  • Make arrangements to have your lawn maintained while you are away. An overgrown or snow-covered landscape is an obvious sign that your home is unoccupied.

Invest in a quality security system

Studies show homes without a security system are three times more likely to be broken into. If you have an alarm system use it, if not don't waste anymore time.
