Burglary Statistics

75% of all burglaries occur in residential areas. In 2012 the FBI received reports on approximately 2.1 million home burglaries. That amounts to about one burglary every 15 seconds. And keep in mind that is reported crimes. How many home burglaries occur that are never reported? Sixty percent of burglaries reported were committed by forcible entry, the most common entry point; the front door, followed by the back door and ground floor windows. Although most burglaries occur during daylight hours when burglars expect the home to be empty, in 28% of the reported burglaries, a homeowner was on the premises.

The Costs of Burglary vs. the Cost of Security Monitoring

It is estimated that every home broken into looses approximately $2,200 in cash, property, or other valuables. Add to this the repair bills for damage done during forcible entry. Can you place a value on the loss to your “Peace of Mind?” What about the time off work for repairmen, police reports, and maybe court appearances? And have you thought that replacing that which was stolen may not be that easy. Thieves are interested in money and jewelry for sure, but more and more thefts have electronics as the target. Can you replace the contents on your laptop? What about the photos from your recent vacation or family reunion? Do you have family heirlooms in your home that could never be replaced? Will your Home Owner Insurance premiums increase if you have reported a burglary? Although having someone monitor your security system 24/7 is not free (only $19.95/Month with us), the cost of a burglary is much higher than the cost of monitoring.

The Benefit of Home Monitoring in Reducing Burglary - What do Burglars Say

Dr Joseph Kuhns from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte conducted a survey of 422 inmates across the three states of Kentucky, Ohio, and North Carolina. 83% of the offenders indicated that they looked for the presence of an alarm system as they reconnoitered a potential burglary site. 60% indicated that the presence of an alarm would cause them to seek another target.
