75% of all burglaries occur in residential areas. In 2012 the FBI received reports on approximately 2.1 million home burglaries. That amounts to about one burglary every 15 seconds. And keep in mind that is reported crimes. How many home burglaries occur that are never reported? Sixty percent of burglaries reported were committed by forcible entry, the most common entry point; the front door, followed by the back door and ground floor windows. Although most burglaries occur during daylight hours when burglars expect the home to be empty, in 28% of the reported burglaries, a homeowner was on the premises.

Dr Joseph Kuhns from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte conducted a survey of 422 inmates across the three states of Kentucky, Ohio, and North Carolina. 83% of the offenders indicated that they looked for the presence of an alarm system as they reconnoitered a potential burglary site. 60% indicated that the presence of an alarm would cause them to seek another target.
